How to ship to Brasil

In the past few years, trade between the US and Brazil has soared to numbers hardly thought possible a decade ago. The US imports everything from soy to lumber and finished wooden products to name a few, and sells a multitude of manufactured products. While the benefits of trade are obvious, many businesses find it unattractive to sell their products in Brazil, and in a lot of cases; this notion comes from the complicated processes involving trade in that country.

This Guide Vows to provide a simplifying hand to those interested in trading with Brazil that do not understand or want to handle the bureaucratic requirements of the Brazilian Government. Whereas Argents can easily perform all necessary Export Documentation and handling to Brazil, the entire process is much easier and cost-effective if the exporters are aware of their role.

Useful Information:

Shipping to Brazil involves a multitude of details and requirements. Those range from worldwide accepted rules such as the ones regulating Wood Packing Materials; to specific requirements such as the need for both original and copies of all shipping documents. In the lines below, Argents will give you useful information that aims at clarifying the many doubts Exporters have, as well as making the process faster and more efficient.

Before you Ship:

The Brazilian Government requires that all goods sold in Brazil have labels printed in Portuguese so if you are shipping pre-packaged goods it might be interesting to ask your customer for the specifications and offer the correct Labels as a value added to your product. In many cases, labels printed in the local language speed up Customs inspections and clearance. Another Requirement is that all solid wood packing materials (WPM) be either Heat Treated or Fumigated with the respective certificates being provided. The Brazilian Government strongly recommends use of Heat Treated WPM as the acceptance of Fumigated WPMs is being phased out.

Documentation Requirements

In order to comply with Brazilian Rules, Foreign shippers must comply with a number of special requirements. While Argents can make sure our clients meet all the necessary criteria, a few duties fall on the exporters hand as outlined below.

  • Wood Packing Material: Once you have made sure your goods comply with the Brazilian Requirements, all documentation verifying compliance must accompany the cargo. Heat treated WPM must be marked as such. Fumigated WPM must be accompanied by an Original Fumigation Certificate. In either case both the Commercial Invoice and Packing list must mention the type and quantity of Packing Materials used.

    Example: 5 Wooden Crates Containing...
Example 2: 5 Plastic Crates Containing...

  • Commercial Invoice: Brazilian Customs requires that every shipment be accompanied by at least One Original Invoice and Packing list. These must state the currency and value of the goods, name of the importer (including CNPJ#), payment terms, goods being shipped and quantity (Must be mentioned in Metric Units). It is a good Idea to send your representative at Argents a Proof Copy of these documents prior to issuing originals so that we can certify that the documents meet Brazilian Requirements. Once verified, Originals of both the Commercial Invoice and Packing List must be issued, stamped and Signed.

  • Bill of Lading: All cargo shipped to Brazil must be accompanied by full sets of bills of lading. These must contain all information relevant particular shipment as well as the cargo. Be sure to have complete and accurate information about the your customer such as the correct name, address and CNPJ number. Cargo must be described exactly as in the commercial invoice, and it must include the NCM code which is the Brazilian tariff heading.

  • Original Documentation: The Brazilian Government requires both originals and copies of all documents. Upon receipt of the commercial invoice, packing list and other pertinent documentation; Argents Express will issue full sets of the shipping documents and courier them to the destination agent who will be clearing the cargo through Brazilian customs.
